Ciência, corpo e mente como categorias de conhecimento AgEcon
Siqueira, Euler David de.
In modern times the human body is pointed out as the central locus of countless representations and discussions, mainly those based in the consumption, pleasure and leisure society. As for the phylosophical thinking tradition the human body has hierachically been ranked inferior to reason and soul. Nowadays the new forms of communication and information impose an aesthetic pattern turned to pleasure and consumption, radically accelerating the process of valorizing capital. In the center of the consumption process the human body gains importance over the rational dimension, after all, saving an immortal soul is no longer what it is all about, but to make use of the potentialities that a healthy and cared about body can offer. Meanwhile, new relations...

Does Experience Determine Performance? A Meta-Analysis on the Experience-Performance Relationship AgEcon
Peake, Whitney O.; Marshall, Maria I..
The impact of experience on entrepreneurial performance has been widely tested. Although experience is expected to positively impact performance, results are varied. This research synthesizes the current literature by determining systematic sources of variation through both exploratory and ordered probit analyses. Results reveal that start date for data collection and form of experience tested pose a major impact on the probability of obtaining a positive estimate for the experience-performance relationship. This research further emphasizes the need for tightened standards across the experience-performance literature in order to equip both academics and practitioners with better information.

Dynamic Processes in the Contingent Valuation of an Endangered Mammal Species AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A.; Wilson, Clevo; Swarna Nantha, Hemanath.
Reports experimental results involving 204 members of the public who were asked their willingness to pay for the conservation of the mahogany glider Petaurus gracilis on three occasions: prior to information being provided to them about the glider and other wildlife species; after such information was provided, and after participants had an opportunity to see live specimens of this endangered species. Variations in the mean willingness to pay are analysed. Concerns arise about whether information provision and experience reveal ‘true’ contingent valuations of public goods and about the choice of the relevant contingent valuation measure.

Eliciting the Implicit Knowledge and Perceptions of On-Ground Conservation Managers of the Macquarie Marshes Ecology and Society
Fazey, Ioan; Institute of Rural Sciences, University of Wales, Aberystwyth; ioan.fazey@gmail.com; Proust, Katrina; Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies, Australian National University;; Newell, Barry; Australian National University;; Johnson, Bill; Department of Environment and Conservation;; Fazey, John A.; University of Wales, Bangor;.
Knowledge that has been developed through extensive experience of receiving and responding to ecological feedback is particularly valuable for informing and guiding environmental management. This paper captures the implicit understanding of seven experienced on-ground conservation managers about the conservation issues affecting the Ramsar listed Macquarie Marshes in New South Wales, Australia. Multiple interviews, a workshop, and meetings were used to elicit the manager's knowledge. The managers suggest that the Macquarie Marshes are seriously threatened by a lack of water, and immediate steps need to be taken to achieve more effective water delivery. Their knowledge and perceptions of the wider societal impediments to achieving more effective water...

Learning More Effectively from Experience Ecology and Society
Fazey, Ioan; Australian National University; ifazey@cres.anu.edu.au.; Fazey, John A.; University of Wales, Bangor; pes001@bangor.ac.uk; Fazey, Della M. A.; University of Wales, Bangor; pes007@bangor.ac.uk.
Developing the capacity for individuals to learn effectively from their experiences is an important part of building the knowledge and skills in organizations to do good adaptive management. This paper reviews some of the research from cognitive psychology and phenomenography to present a way of thinking about learning to assist individuals to make better use of their personal experiences to develop understanding of environmental systems. We suggest that adaptive expertise (an individual’s ability to deal flexibly with new situations) is particularly relevant for environmental researchers and practitioners. To develop adaptive expertise, individuals need to: (1) vary and reflect on their experiences and become adept at seeking out and taking...

New Varieties and the Returns to Commodity Promotion: Washington Fuji Apples AgEcon
Richards, Timothy J.; Patterson, Paul M..
The Fuji apple variety is relatively new in the U.S. As a new product, questions concern the relative impact of consumer learning by experience, by variety-specific promotion, or by generic apple promotion. A two-stage (LES/LAIDS) model incorporating both types of promotion is used to estimate the effect of generic and variety specific promotion, as well as consumer experience, on the demand for Fuji apples. Estimates show each to have a positive impact, and also show new or specialty apple varieties to be relatively price inelastic, but income elastic. Grower returns to promotion are calculated with an equilibrium displacement model of price changes and producer surplus. Changes in producer surplus provide a base-scenario benefit:cost ratio of 14.73....

Relationships between physiological and behavioral responses of goat bucks in mating season R. Bras. Zootec.
Karaca,Serhat; Yılmaz,Ayhan; Ser,Gazel; Sarıbey,Muammer.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine the sexual parameters in young bucks with different sexual activity and the effect of experience (age) on sexual parameters in bucks. Fifteen young, sexually inexperienced (SI) and five adult, sexually experienced (SE) Saanen × Hair goat crossbred bucks were used in this study. Bucks were individually exposed to three estrus does for 15-min periods during four sexual performance tests, which were carried out every other day to determine some sexual behavior traits such as flehmen response, reaction time, and ejaculation efficiency. Sexually inexperienced young bucks were evaluated based on their sexual activity (active (AC) vs inactive (IA)) and presence of horn. It was found that AC bucks had...

Sex differences in foraging behaviour and oviposition site preference in an insect predator, Orius sauteri OAK
Nakashima, Yoshitaka; Hirose, Yoshimi; 仲島, 義貴.
The effects of patch quality on the foraging behaviour of an anthocorid predator Orius sauteri (Poppius) were compared between sexes. Prior experience in patches was also studied to determine whether this was a factor affecting oviposition decisions. Patch quality affected patch residence time differently for the two sexes; females stayed much longer in a patch with prey (60 Thrips palmi larvae) than a patch without prey, while males did not remain in any patch for extended periods. Most of the females remained in or moved to patches with prey, whereas males dispersed, irrespective of patch quality. Both females released in patches with prey and females released in patches without prey deposited more eggs per hour in patches with prey than in patches...

THE ROLE OF THE EUROPEAN RESEARCH NETWORKS IN RURAL DEVELOPMENT AgEcon
Voicilas, Dan Marius; Cvijanovic, Gorica; Mijajlovic, Nada.
The present paper intends to present “a short history” of a young research network established a few years ago. The network has already a European cover and impact. Its activity was very intense and the results over expectations. Moreover, the cohesion among members makes possible the development of the activity for the future. By this article we want to give an example of a “good practice” in this field. Could be an example for other networks, institutes, research centres and researcher of how an idea can become reality.

Too Smart for Their Own Good! Complexity, Capacity and Credence in Trade Negotiations AgEcon
Kerr, William A..
Multilateral trade negotiations are, by design, becoming increasingly complex. The current degree of complexity limits the ability to assess the effects of a potential agreement and inhibits the transparency needed to reach an agreement. Despite the considerable recent efforts at capacity building in developing countries, the additional complexity has outstripped the ability to build capacity. This article draws upon New Institutional Economics to examine the effects of complexity on trade negotiations. The conclusion is that the rational decision of many countries may be to opt for no agreement.
